Lobby server setups?

Recommended Posts

Is it about time that the South East Asian region started having competitive lobby servers to cater to those who want to play in a serious semi-competitive environment? I've seen many streams of people playing on lobby servers and these servers are more often than not populated by players who want to play a serious game with competitive rules for once.

These lobby servers are set up as such that voice comms is still optional but players would be playing with a competitive config setup such that they can play either 6v6 or highlander. It's a great way to get people exposed to the competitive setting because they will slowly obtained the idea of what to do in a competitive setting and because people who are bored of playing against noobs and rolling them constantly want a better challenge.

I think it's about high time such servers were setup because, well for one the competitive scene in south east asia is gaining ground, albeit slowly. This can really boost the rate in which the competitive community here in SEA grows. Setting up about 3 servers, 2 6v6 servers and 1 highlander server can greatly increase the growth rate of the competitive community here in SEA. Also, setting up such servers shouldn't be too much of a burden on server operators.

Players in SEA should be more exposed to these kinds of competitive scenarios and it would eventually teach them that players are getting better and better. A minimum benchmark for good plays should have already been set up by now and these servers would cater to those who have reached this level and want to play with others in these servers. It's time lobbies were set up.

What do you mean by lobby? tf2lobby or what? We already have pug servers to cater for everyone who wants to play. (tried making an SEA lobby server on tf2lobby once and 3/4 of the players there were like from other countries like Russia)

tf2lobby has a terrible atmosphere and environment as well, not conducive to new players and plenty of bugs and issues

In case you've not checked, there are currently 4 6's servers (all of which can be changed to a HL server with a config) and one dedicated HL server.

Are you not in the Asiafortress Pickup and Asiafortress HL Pickup groups? Instead of setting up an entire website/widget dedicated to lobbies, a simple creation of an event will have a notification sent out to over 200-400 people (if they are online) instantly, asking them to come to the server for a PUG. Not all 200 people will enter because 1. They're doing other things or 2. They aren't even online. For 6's, mumble isn't required though it will be appreciated. On the other hand, mumble is a requirement for all HL pugs and weeklies.

Why isn't TF2 Lobby used?

1. Needs rcon access to the server.

2. Any one in the world can enter the lobby. This means people with 300 ping entering the server and they can't be subbed out (and won't ask for a sub out) because the password of the server is different and there probably are no spectators.

3. It is super messy. And not everyone in Asia frequents TF2Lobby (I've only used it once in the past year). How are you going to get the competitive scene in Asia to grow if no one even uses the platform you're publicising it at?

I forgot to add. If you have seen the AFA sign up thread, alot of players signed up cause they want try out competitive. :D Heck, even our highlander admins encourage a few of the pubbers to try out highlander.

Even if you do somehow set up Asian lobby servers, it won't do as much as you think it will. Competitive lobbies for TF2 have pretty much only spawned yet another "sect" of TF2 players that basically only ever play lobbies and whore points.

we've tried it before and it's fucking awful iirc. It's already so hard getting players to download new maps/irc and the lobby system was no diff.

One of the biggest obstacles at that point in time was that when a player disconnected, it was really tough to get a sub for him, and most games ended up 5v6. That being said, lobby has a really neat stat-tracking system
