    AsiaFortress Academy 3 Ask-Us-Anything thread.

Yes, you can have a sniper instead of a roamer. Having one 100% of the time instead of a roamer won't work, though. You can certainly try, but it won't work as much as you think it might.

    Prec broken

It won't be unbroken unless Valve themselves step in and fix it. But I think there's at least one person working on a plugin with similar functionality. How long it takes to write the plugin, and how long it takes Valve to sign the plugin after that I can't say at all. http://www.teamfortress.tv/forum/thread/3595-p-rec-broken-after-update#post-52382 http://etf2l.org/forum/general/topic-6647/page-41/

    PSA: Offclassing in AF pugs

That seems a bit redundant, seeing as you can just form a mix team. There are also a reasonable amount of regular scrim teams now, and I don't mean just local teams. Considering teams from all regions, I think there are at least 10 teams that will be free to scrim on a good day, at a good time. As for setting up a list of guidelines for new people on when and where to offclass or not, I have no interest in racking my brain for such an exhaustive list. I will also caution that such a list must be as concise as possible, and even if it is, it's likely to be ignored(like everything else that is to be read) by new players. Lastly, if the list is created, it would be best to use both the guidelines and the "off-classing green-light" from your team to know when to off-class.

AsiaFortress Academy: What you need to know

Rules: Having a microphone is absolutely necessary. Doesn't need to be an expensive gaming mic, just pick up a cheap stand-mic if you don't have one. Each person must pick a single class they would like to learn. Learning other classes is left to you, once you migrate to normal pickup games. Downloading, installing and using Mumble is absolutely necessary for AFA PuGs. If you have mumble, are in the channel but are a player who has been reported for not communicating enough, we reserve the right to suspend you from AFA. While this is supposed to be a fun experience, we expect you to take the mentoring sessions seriously. Don't expect your mentor to spoon-feed you everything. Do your own research, look for your own resources, and most importantly practice things like your rollouts, your jumps, etc on your own time. If you're having trouble with a certain jump, rollout, or anything, there's no harm in asking, provided you actually tried on your own and failed. Carrying on from the point above, take the learning process seriously; we don't want to see you go into regular PuGs and then fool around playing a class that isn't your main(if you weren't allowed to play your main that's a different story), or off-classing unnecessarily. Just because you see the "pros" do it, doesn't mean you should. Don't pester/harass/annoy your mentors. We're all spending our time and effort on this, when pretty much all of us could be doing other things. Your mentors don't owe you anything; it's the other way around. Respect everyone in the community, even those that may be less skilled than you, and keep trash-talk to an absolute minimum. You're here to play games, improve and have fun, not to start internet fights. If you have a LEGITIMATE problem(Someone calling you fat doesn't count) with any member of the community, first PM an admin from this list, (or PM a mentor) and ask if you should create a public forum topic. If they say they will handle it, leave it at that. If they tell you to create a forum topic, go ahead and create one under "General Discussion" and clearly state(in detail) as much as you can about the incident. Read the guides section, and download/install everything in the Software/Resources section below. Lastly, don't be stupid, don't make hasty decisions/actions, and don't be an assclown. Guides: Once you're done registering, go through as many of the guides below as possible. Guides marked [mandatory] HAVE to be read. A Guide to Mumble [mandatory] Setting up and Customisation (Custom HUDs can be found in this guide) [mandatory] Spammah's Guide to Getting Good at all Classes [mandatory] Getting Started in Competitive TF: A Complete Guide A Guide to AsiaFortress Academy Medic for Bodohs Informative Videos: (Single video, absolute basics) (Playlist of videos)List of VanillaTF2 insight videos (Similar to the MGE videos) TCM Byte's Commentary/Class analysis videos (More advanced than the VanillaTF2/MGE videos) Software or resources you'll need to download: Mumble (Download the version relevant to your operating system from the "Get Mumble" box) Commonly played maps (If you don't have a map and can't download from the gameserver, download from this link) PoV-Record, aka P-REC Demo recording plugin for TF2 (Guide to P-REC is below) FPS Configs: To download the config, right click on the one you want; maxframes, for example, select "Save Link As", "Save Target As" and change "Save as Type" to "All Files". Your filename should be "autoexec.cfg" without the quotation marks. Follow the installation process in the link(using notepad/wordpad to open the config file). Mini-guide to P-REC and demos in general: PoV-Record, or P-REC is an addon/plugin for TF2 that will automatically record a demo(game replay) from your player perspective when certain in-game conditions are met. For our purposes, this in-game condition is TF2's tournament mode being enabled(mp_tournament 1). So by default, if you have P-REC installed and are playing on a server with "mp_tournament 1", P-REC will start recording a demo from your perspective as soon as both teams ready up. P-REC will also record killstreaks(and player bookmarks) in a demo and put them in a Killstreaks.txt file. Installation: Once you've downloaded the p-rec.rar file from the link above, extract its contents(PREC.cfg, PREC.dll and PREC.vdf) to your "\Steam\steamapps\[username]\team fortress 2\tf\addons" folder. If there's no addons folder in \tf, create one. Setup: Launch TF2, and open your console by pressing the ~ key(the key below Esc). If your console doesn't open, close down TF2, right click on Team Fortress 2 in your Steam library, and select Properties. Click on "Set Launch Options" and add "-console" without quotation marks to the text area. Click ok and then close the Properties dialog box. If you've installed an FPS config(which you should have), you should have the console enabled. There are a few useful console commands you can use to configure P-REC: prec_mode [number] Where [number] must be 0, 1, 2, or 3. This command has to do with the conditions for P-REC to record demos. 0 will disable P-REC 1 will only record custom named demos 2 will only record demos on servers with "mp_tournament 1" (This is the one you want) 3 will always record demos in any server prec_notify [number] Where [number] must be 0, 1, or 2. This command tells P-REC where to put start, stop or bookmark notifications. 0 sends notifications to console 1 sends notifications to team chat 2 sends notifications to HUD prec_min_streak [number] Where [number] is any number(decimals not allowed) greater than or equal to 2. This command tells P-REC how many kills in a row(minimum) are required to log a killstreak in the Killstreaks.txt file. For example, "prec_min_streak 3" will make P-REC note down a killstreak in your Killstreaks.txt file ever time you get 3 kills in a row, if those kills aren't too far apart(more on that next). prec_kill_delay [number] Where [number] is any number(decimals not allowed) greater than or equal to 5. This command sets the max delay(in seconds) between kills in killstreaks. For example if you have "prec_min_streak 3" and "prec_kill_delay 15", P-REC will log a killstreak every time you get three kills in a row, and the timing between two kills is less than or equal to 15 seconds. prec_screens [number] Where [number] is either 0 or 1. Setting this to 1 will make P-REC take a screenshot of game status and and end-of-round-scoreboard screenshot for every map played. Be sure to set this to 1 before playing in tournaments prec_mark This command manually sets a bookmark in the Killstreaks.txt file. However, this command is most useful when bound to a key. For example, "bind del prec_mark" will make my delete key set bookmarks. prec_record This command manually starts recording a new demo(and will save/end any demos being recorded). Similar to prec_mark, this is most useful when bound to a key. Lastly, if you open your PREC.cfg file in notepad/wordpad, you'll see a number of lines of text. You're primarily concerned with the ones below. As you can see below, the phases "Recording..", "Stop record." and "Bookmark." will show up in team chat, console, or HUD(based on prec_notify) when you start recording, stop recording or set a bookmark, respectively. //Here you can change plugins phrases "Phrases" { "start_rec" "Recording..." "stop_rec" "Stop record." "on_mark" "Bookmark." Demo Playback: Now that you've recorded demos, how do you watch them? The first, most important thing to do is disable "Multicore Rendering" from TF2's advanced video options. Next, how do you find your demos? All your demos will be in your "Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\[username]\team fortress 2\tf" folder. But they all follow a certain naming convention. A demo recorded by P-REC will look something like "20121207_2113_cp_badlands_pig_legend.dem". Confusing isn't it? Not really. The number 20121207 is the date, so 2012/12/07, or 7 Dec 2012. The number 2113 indicates the time via 24-hr clock, so in this case it's 9:13PM. cp_badlands is obviously the map name, and "pig" and "legend" are the team names of the red and blu team, respectively. Now onto actually playing demos. If you've launched TF2 and disabled multicore rendering, you're ready to go. Press Shift+F2 to open the demoui. This is what will allow you to play your demos. Press the "Load" button, find the demo you want to play and double click on it. It will start playing on its own. You can then control playback with the Pause/Resume button, and the playback-speed slider. Demos are made up of ticks(don't get funny with me), which are basically recorded frames. You'll be using the text-box next to the "Goto" button to input a tick you want to go to, after which you'll press "Goto". This is useful when you've set a bookmark, or have a killstreak at a certain tick and want to jump to that tick. That's about all for now; hurry up and register, setup/customise your game and tell all your friends!

    AsiaFortress Academy 3 Ask-Us-Anything thread.

It all depends on the team. If your heavy classes are doing sufficient damage or outdamaging the enemy team, but no one's dying on the enemy team, then yes, the scouts need to get many kills. If your heavy classes are getting kills, scouts are probably better off putting pressure on the enemy team with good positioning and mid-long range shots, rather than getting in the enemy team's face. That's my opinion, at least.

Yes, naturally. How much class specific mentoring will be given, I can't say. I'm pretty sure we're not doing very advanced stuff. Any experienced players who volunteer and don't troll mentoring sessions. Dunno. That's not upto me.
