    Pacific Rim hype anyone?

Oh my God this is brilliant. It's almost like Cave Johnson in a movie.
  2. Eh, Joe told me to put all the player demos in one zip file with proper names, so I did that.
  3. Both of our teams forgot to execute the config for the first round(which we lost) so we executed and then played to a 5-0 then 1-0.

    Tf2 Matchmaking System

Like Sal said, all of this is going to be HL-specific, because no one in 6v6 is going to budge on the current class+unlock restrictions.

    Tf2 Matchmaking System

Like Mr. Inadequacy and others have pointed out, this is an excellent first step for competitive TF2. A year ago, I'd never have thought something like this would see the light of day, but now "competitive" TF2 has a shot at official support from Valve. All this hand-wringing and fretting about there being no 6v6 match-making, or that HL is too 'casual' is pointless. More HL players means more attention for competitive TF2, and more potential 6v6 players; in my book, that's a good thing.

    Am I mentally ill?

Watch high level NA or EU 6v6 games, try and blindly mimic their strategies in a PuG, then assess why it went wrong or why it worked. Joining a team will help a lot if there are players above your skill level in said team, and they provide constructive criticism on your play.

    Am I mentally ill?

There are plenty of people like that. Your positioning and pushing as a pocket needs lots of work from what I've experienced today.

AsiaFortress player interview #3 - Shounic

In today's incarnation of AsiaFortress player interviews, we have with us our resident tubby, Shounic. i: Alright, to get started, when did you get into competitive TF2 and what made you want to join? s: I remember the first competition I entered was AFL 5, but I started a bit before that. I remember stumbling upon the eXtv casts of complexity back in the day when he still had custom skins for the teams when he was casting. I think that was my first interaction with competitive TF2. Though I think the initial thought was "how good is the best TF2 player?", and it just so happens that there is such a thing as comp TF2 i: Anyway, onto the next question. Did you have the fortune of being trained in the first incarnation of AFA, or did you just learn in PuGs? s: I didn't even know AFA existed back when I started. I only knew about the NA scene, so I was in TF2lobby trying to play at like, 200 ping? After a while I looked to see if there was an Asian scene in competitive TF2, and all thanks to google I started pugging a bit but I was obviously shit. So I stuck to watching videos, eXtv casts. I started as a soldier, haven't really changed. This was a pretty big jump from my 300 hours of pub pyro in some US server back then. nom nom nom US I think it's called i: Do you think you would have benefited from AFA, and how were your experiences with the AsiaFortress PuGs? s: Assuming AFA just taught the basics, I honestly don't think it would've helped me much, as the eXtv casts pretty much taught me everything, and anything extine didn't cover I saw from what the players were doing in the match. There were also plenty of things like rocket jumping videos on youtube, and a little bit of digging was enough for me to learn all the basics. Pugs back in my day was a medic fight at mid. I think sometimes I didn't roll quick enough, but mostly I played soldier. The people were pretty cool, and I payed attention to the names of people that were deemed good. Back then ripple had a sunbeams tyrant, that was cool. heartsqueen was a nice guy I remember, not sure where he is now. I also remembered Bing. Back then I was kind of an idiot and he didn't like me all that much. We got over it pretty quickly. i: When you started playing, did you have a specific class in mind you wanted to play? A certain player you wanted to be like? s: When I started I thought soldier was going to be the easiest; you could do a lot of damage, the aiming wasn't as hard as scout, and you could go fast! So soldier seemed like a good idea to me. And at the time when I was still pubbing on that US server, there was this guy called Whalerocket, and he was a pretty good soldier. I think that and the Jaeger airshots made me want to play soldier. It seemed to me that most of the great players were soldiers. I remember reading some online forums and people were tossing names like TLR, Platinum, Mackey, Reptile around a lot. i: Before we continue, I have to warn you I'll be including at some point, a random question that will make your mind explode. Alright; how do you imagine any AsiaFortress team of your choice would fare at i49? s: I think asians have dm comparable to AU, EU, and the NA people, but strategy-wise I think we're a bit behind. i: What is your most immediate TF2 goal in the near future? s: Well my summer break is coming up soon, so since that means no school, I'll probably be MGE'ing and pugging everyday and scrimming with my team when we can, watching the ESEA LAN Invite stv's that were recently put up. Basically get better. I don't think there's a particular area I'm bad in; as in, I don't have a strong focus on anything. But I think overall I'll have to work on teamwork more. And i think that's about it. Hit more airshots? i: Are you happy with Steam Pipe? s: Yes. Steam pipe overall was good, everything loads faster. I have been crashing more often because of it though, but it seems it's calmed down. I'm dissapointed valve didn't fix the mumble overlay yet though, and I want 110 fov. i: Doesn't everyone? Anyway, did you ever load so slowly in PuGs you missed out on +1's? s: No. Before steampipe, I was the first few to join most of the time. Now hasn't really changed though, just less waiting time. i: Alright, it's time for the magic question! Do you wear the pants in your relationships? s: Yes i: Ok, moving on. What is your ultimate TF2 6v6 goal? s: Have fun, win a competition maybe. I think that's really about it. i: Do you feel any closer to that goal than you did half a year ago? s: Well, definitely. Back when I started I would miss with rockets, get stomped in MGE, and burden the team a lot in PuGs. I can pretty safely say I've improved since I started. i: Wrapping up, any last words? Er, I mean, any closing words? Rest assured we were certainly not thinking of subjecting you to a firing squad. s: Ha, fuzz used humor. i: It was super-effective! s: I'll give shoutouts to my team, the past and current admins of AF, all the cool people I've met here, and the hours put into the AsiaFortress servers procastinating whatever work I have to do. And fuzz you should sit down. i: What can I say, this interview has kept me on the edge of my seat. s: Special shoutout to jigglesaur's 2 week adventure in Australia. i: Thanks for your time. You have been shounic, and I have been Admiral Fuzzbeard. Good night.

AsiaFortress player interview #3 - Shounic

Randomly for the most part. Being an interesting or skilled player is a bit of a factor.
  19. *Disclaimer: Varying definitions of "everything" may apply. What is SteamPipe? SteamPipe is Valve's new content distribution system for Steam. Advantages of using SteamPipe, as claimed by Valve: Faster and smoother downloads Faster game boot times and map load times Easier distribution, installation, and management of mods Smoother dedicated server distribution and update rollover The bolded text is good news for everyone who can't play AsiaFortress PuGs because they load slowly and never get +1's. Great! When will TF2 be on SteamPipe? The TF2 game files will officially be converted on the 30th of April 2013. There is, however a way to get the beta release of TF2 on SteamPipe right now. Tell me how! Before I tell you how, be warned of a number of things: Your GCF files will be deleted, along with the possibility of some of your custom content(HUDs, configs, maps, addons, model skins, sounds, etc) being deleted. It is now possible for SteamPipe clients to join non-SteamPipe servers, and non-SteamPipe clients to join SteamPipe servers. You CAN opt back out of the beta(go back to GCFs) before the 30th, but it's very likely you won't get your game customisation back. Most plugins will work(where to place them will be discussed later) excluding our great and wonderful P-REC :'( SourceMod Anti-Cheat is erroneously detecting SteamPipe clients as cheaters and banning them. Tell server admins you know to update their SourceMod to the latest version. If you're going to try this out, I would recommend trying it on an alternate account on a different PC. Before you opt in, you should backup all your custom content and your demos. Go into your "C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\[username]\team fortress 2\tf" folder and backup any folders that contain custom content(addons, cfg, maps, models, particles, resource, scripts) Also remember, that you need enough space on disk for two copies of TF2. Once it's converted, it will go back to standard disk space usage. Now, to opt into the SteamPipe beta, right click on TF2 in your Steam library, go to properties, click on the "Betas" tab and select "steampipe - " Your game files should then be converted, and your GCFs will be deleted. If you've opted into the beta, there are still some things you need to do, which will be described in the next section. I don't want to opt into the beta; is there anything I need to do? Whether or not you opt into the beta, once your game files are converted, there are some things you need to know about the workings of the new filesystem. The path of your game files will be changed from "[steam installation directory]/steamapps/[username]/team fortress 2/" to "[steam installation directory]/steamapps/common/Team Fortress 2/" All the GCF files in your steamapps folder will be deleted. Dowloaded files will not go to their respective folders based on type as they currently do. For example, a custom map you would currently download from a server will go to your "maps" folder. Once you're using SteamPipe, it will go to your "tf/download" folder. This has been done so you can distinguish between server-downloaded files(that you may want to remove) and files that you've downloaded yourself. Files that you've previously downloaded/replaced(if they don't get deleted during conversion) will be moved to "tf/download" during the conversion. I would recommend deleting everything in the "tf/download" folder after conversion. Explanation on that in the next point. Custom content you manually download should now go into "tf/custom", but to make it simpler to distinguish between different custom files, make a subfolder under the custom folder, such as "tf/custom/mystuff". Say you have a NoHats mod and you want to keep those custom files separate from other custom files, you can make another subfolder in 'custom', and put the NoHats files in there. So your file paths would be "tf/custom/NoHats/models" and "tf/custom/NoHats/particles". The game will still read those folders, and the NoHats files in 'models' and 'particles' will not mix with other 'models' and 'particles' files in the event that you want to remove them. Basically, Valve says do not extract any custom content directly into "tf/custom". Always extract it into a subfolder(create one if there's nothing in there). All your addons, cfg, maps, models, particles, resource, scripts, sound folders should go into a subfolder(can be named anything) under "tf/custom". Only .vpk files should go directly into the "tf/custom" folder. .vpk files basically contain everything a mod needs in a compressed format, including folder structure and varying files. However, at this point in time, no custom content I've heard about is distributed in .vpk format. That's about it for now. The most important thing at the moment is to backup all your custom content, and your demos. Click here to view the article
