Question Request for mentoring in HL (Competitive Newbie)
Teddybar. replied to Thecrikenmaster's topic in Archive
Go read the many guides, watch HL videos and analyse how HL is played before asking for mentoring. No one is going to spoon feed you here. -
always turn volume down when watching numlocked's streams.

Sharp turns can be done by holding duck + A or D, and then turning your mouse in that direction. The faster you turn, the sharper you will strafe, but there is a limit to the extremeness of your strafing angle, and you have to experiment yourself to find out just how sharply you can strafe. I recommend practising on jump maps (though some will disagree with me), but some beginner stages really do require you to perform basic air strafes and turns. Practise on that stage till you can do it easily. Having no access to a mouse, well, that's a whole different story. It's one of the basic necessities to a FPS PC game I guess, but I do know of a roamer who uses his laptop trackpad to play (not very well for that matter). Right now I'm assuming you play using a laptop, unless you use a PS controller wired to your PC or something like that which you did not state. As for myself, my mouse is an old piece of shit that came free with the second computer I had 14 years ago. The mouse 1 button drops out at times when I press too hard on it, the trackball has to be cleaned occasionally (yes, my mouse has a ball), and sometimes it just goes haywire and my view pans to the sky or starts spinning like crazy for no reason till I shake the mouse to regain control. Still, having a shitty mouse is better than having no mouse at all. Just purchase a basic and cheap one by yourself and use it. PS: I'm definitely not a person able to suggest a pro gaming mouse for you.

Air strafing is not only crucial for soldiers, it is also as well for all other classes (so you can avoid getting airshotted or just surf your way to safety). I would say almost everyone is able to air strafe, and it is not difficult to learn it by yourself. Saw you try to register for AFA in the other thread, so I highly doubt that the plateau of skills you are able to achieve by yourself is only this. Try watching some videos of competitive 6s play on youtube, and understand the individual roles of each class. There are a few useful guides on this site as well. What I'm trying to say is, please don't give up on trying to improve by yourself. Saying that you've reached the plateau of skills you can achieve by yourself even before you tried playing competitively is just... ridiculous. I'm not trying to diss on you or anything, but it feels to me that you're just too lazy to get started on your own.

Upcoming improvements, additions and metagame changes

Eliminating the 'skip' function when picking would be nice. Some people abuse that function and it not only slows down the picking process, but also makes the person waiting to be picked (very often newbies) feel bad. -
hmm. the snakewater demo rollout is, in all honesty, one of the easiest among all 5cp maps (unless you're doing a variation into the saw room). just create a server in your free time and know the layouts of different maps (it's usually only badlands, gran, gully, snake and the occasional process and koth viaduct). enable cheats in console; use hurtme -9999 so you have pretty much infinite hp to practice your jumps with worrying about hp. once you get your basic rollouts down, work on polishing off the rough edges (minimizing fall damage; sticky placement for faster jumps etc). Though I rarely play demo in pugs, I still like to create servers just to practice rollouts (for both soldier and demo) and normal jumping (between different map areas). Anyway, wish more new players were like you - eager to improve so as to not disappoint your team (and cause unwanted rage by disrupting games).

"Group is made for the famous choosen pug players in asia." Must be some parallel dimension..

Got invited. Dunno whether to cry or not. Anyway, like they always say, imitation is the best form of flattery.

Banned since October last year for reasons unknown

I believe Joe has already replied to you. Also note that AF servers have passwords, and you will not be able to browse for them if you 'only display games without passwords'. You may also want to sort games according to alphabetical order so that AF servers appear near the top, if you are still using the browsing method.

Like Fuzz said, try changing the font. It actually gets pretty tiring to read the words. Try a font that is pleasing on the eyes. On the plus side, I do like the turquoise and beige overtones, but the black background - it seems a little too plain and contrasting (some might disagree, but it's just my opinion). Maybe a pictured or patterned background instead of just jet black would be nicer? Since it's about gaming, maybe a nice gaming screenshot of some place, like what AF has done, with the rendered snakewater last backdrop. Just experiment around more Hope this helps.
