Singapore!

Recommended Posts

Hey, I'm a New Zealander from nzfortress and ozfortress and I'll be passing through Singapore in July. Are there any/many Singaporian residents who use these forums?

If so, I'm spending only one day in Singapore but wanting to do something whilst I'm there, not just sit in the hotel! So are there any must do's that I could do to keep me occupied for a few hours? Certain foods to try and places to see etc? (I don't really care about the cost) And is there anything I should watch out for or things I shouldn't do?

Even if you don't live there but have been there before you can obviously answer some of these questions as well! If you don't wan't to post here you can PM me or w/e.. Thanks heaps!

Chicken Rice, fried carrot cake, fried oyster egg, fishball noodles (you can get most of these at lau pa sat near Raffles Place , or Gluttons Bay next to the Esplanade Theatre (Promenade).

Universal Studios Singapore, Sentosa, Gardens by the Bay... Nothing much here in Singapore though..

Shopping at Orchard Road gives you plenty to see but it's pretty expensive, if you want cheap band/graphic t-shirts you can go to either bugis street or peninsula plaza

Prostitutes are at geylang, trannies are at orchard towers, night life and clubbing is mostly at clarke quay/outram park (Zouk)

don't stare too long at the people who sit with 1 leg on their chair and the other dangling while furiously shaking both of them and smoking marlboro

Good Evening Care,

I will be hard pressed to recommend you any place other than the standard universal studios and the casino if I follow via the standard guidelines (in which I assume that you are old enough to attend). Night life in singapore is pretty much non-existent. Even the TKA arcade that gains monopoly over distribution of current konami arcade games closes at 1am, and I do not suggest playing it unless u are willing to burn SGD20 dollars per hour (SGD 2.50 per round)

And before I go ranting into how costly arcades in Singapore as compared to Taiwan or Japan, I would suggest exploring the Sim Lim Square or Funan DigitaLife Mall at Bugis and Sim Lim Square respectively. These are the malls which specializes on the sale of electronic goods. I would suggest doing your homework before going there, as to minimize risk of getting cheated though.

If you are interested in the universities around Singapore, there is always National University of Singapore, located in Kent Ridge near Borna Vista MRT, Nanyang Technological University, which is located near the Pioneer MRT. They have a variety of good foods at a cheap price. (Disclaimer: The word good implies good local food, which is not the fancy type of food found in elite class restaurants)

If u want a good heartlands experience, I would suggest stopping at Tampines MRT, as they have 3 malls which are suited in close proximity to the MRT. NEX@Serangoon is another good place too. Jurong Point@Boon Lay MRT and IMM@Jurong East are not bad places too.

If u want to a place for youths to hang out on saturday or sunday, I would suggest stopping at Orchard, and make your way to Scape alongside Cathay Building. I do not recommend the place though, as I find it quite stale and boring in my holiest opinion. (I have to admit that my tastes are not to the norm) In Orchard MRT, there is a bookstore called Kinokunya located at Takashima Mall. It houses the biggest collection of books that are on sale and they do have enough titles to keep you interested, depending on the genres. Also, they have RAW Japanese Light Novels and Mangas, which is a plus. :D

If u are looking for the central library, (and god it houses a huge amount of books), go to the central public library in Bugis. Guarantee that you will spend at least half your day there assuming that you like to study/read books. (It opens at 10am and closes at 9pm if I remember carefully)

If u are looking for good ol' party fun, look for bars along Clarke Quey. I am not a party animal, so I wont be able to describe the life there, in which I will leave it to others to explain.

Lastly, if you come to Toa Payoh, there is a void deck at 12th storey called the Sky Garden in one of the HDB Blocks. It is quite serene, and not many people visit this place often. Though Changi Airport beats the Sky Garden from the time period 0000 hrs to 0600 hrs.

Hope this helps. :D

As for the do's and don't. Follow your own natural survival instinct. Do not insult religion. Singapore is a conservative country, so don't do unconventional stuff. Just act like a gentleman and you will be fine.

And one more thing: Say this: "Girls are scary, I should be avoiding them" and I can guarantee your safety.

how few is a few hours?

also, all the nice things are scattered around these few train stations:

chinatown, which is a straight road down from clarke quay

clarke quay, walk from chinatown for optimal experience

marina bay: giant shopping complex, linked to city hall station via underground mall

city hall: located nearby funan digital life mall(tech shit), where being white doesnt equate to getting scammed

orchard: stretch of road with a metric shit ton of malls

bugis: shopping malls, bugis street, walkable to/from orchard, city hall

all these stations are right alongside each other, if you plan well, you can visit the all the stuff from one end to another within a day:

example goes:

start from orchard, walk all the way to dhoby gaut, take in entire stretch of shopping + presidential residence

take to city hall (1 stop ), walk around, go to funan, walk all the fucking way to marina bay via underground complex, lots to shop/eat/see along the way

spend rest of the time in the marina bay sands region, plus a visit to one of the exhibitions at the art science museum

, have dinner at the shopping mall, eating local food from the food court, not the posh restaurants

you can replace the orchard walk with a walk from chinatown station to clarke quay station, if you wanna see more chinese-y stuff, and see something more quaint, take note to visit maxwell road and the other various small roads along the way

imo universal studios is one gigantic waste of time, resorts world sentosa is a nice place to shop at though

Wow, I wasn't expecting this kind of response!

I'd say not including, time spent in customs, travelling to my hotel and sleeping I'd have about 8-9 hours free? (I arrive in Singapore at 7pm and leave 8pm the following day) I probably should have mentioned I'm not big on sea food but at the same time I LOVE asian food! Also I don't want to do universal studios as I went to both of them in the US a couple of months ago and I'd rather do something cultural in Singapore rather than American. Shopping sounds good, are there any places that sell cheap pc hardware (cheaper than NZ AUS)?

This will be the first time in a foreign country where I will be completely by myself so I will be like a scared/lost puppy..

Thanks for all the suggestions!!

Yup Sim Lim Square. Don't worry about getting lost in Singapore, almost everything is in english and we're so small anyway

To Care,

Just be careful of some retailers in Sim Lim. There are cases in which customers have complained to CASE, and I am not kidding (link http://www.case.org.sg/)

Just to clarify, it is not that I disapprove of Sim Lim. In fact, this is one of my favorite weekly haunts. What I do mean is: Buyers Beware, especially in Sim Lim.

I think this is a better gauge.

Also there is Funan as well. Though it cost more than in Sim Lim Square, you run the less chance of getting cheated, and it is more spacious and there is a bigger variety of other goods other than the electronic ones.
