TF2 on SteamPipe: Everything* you need to know...

*Disclaimer: Varying definitions of "everything" may apply.

What is SteamPipe?

SteamPipe is Valve's new content distribution system for Steam. Advantages of using SteamPipe, as claimed by Valve:

Faster and smoother downloads

Faster game boot times and map load times

Easier distribution, installation, and management of mods

Smoother dedicated server distribution and update rollover

The bolded text is good news for everyone who can't play AsiaFortress PuGs because they load slowly and never get +1's.

Great! When will TF2 be on SteamPipe?

The TF2 game files will officially be converted on the 30th of April 2013. There is, however a way to get the beta release of TF2 on SteamPipe right now.

Tell me how!

Before I tell you how, be warned of a number of things:

Your GCF files will be deleted, along with the possibility of some of your custom content(HUDs, configs, maps, addons, model skins, sounds, etc) being deleted.

You WILL NOT be able to join a game server that is not running the TF2 SteamPipe Dedicated Server. So, pretty much any server that you can access now will be inaccessible(Till the server owner converts on the 30th, or before) if you opt into the SteamPipe beta for TF2. This includes AsiaFortress, StarHub, LowYAT, OneAsiaGamer, and GamersUN servers.

You CAN opt back out of the beta(go back to GCFs) before the 30th, but it's very likely you won't get your game customisation back.

Most plugins will work(where to place them will be discussed later) excluding our great and wonderful P-REC :'(

If you're going to try this out, I would recommend trying it on an alternate account on a different PC.

Before you opt in, you should backup all your custom content and your demos. Go into your "C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\[username]\team fortress 2\tf" folder and backup any folders that contain custom content(addons, cfg, maps, models, particles, resource, scripts)
Also remember, that you need enough space on disk for two copies of TF2. Once it's converted, it will go back to standard disk space usage.
Now, to opt into the SteamPipe beta, right click on TF2 in your Steam library, go to properties, click on the "Betas" tab and select "steampipe - "
Your game files should then be converted, and your GCFs will be deleted.

If you've opted into the beta, there are still some things you need to do, which will be described in the next section.

I don't want to opt into the beta; is there anything I need to do?

Whether or not you opt into the beta, once your game files are converted, there are some things you need to know about the workings of the new filesystem.

The path of your game files will be changed from "[steam installation directory]/steamapps/[username]/team fortress 2/" to "[steam installation directory]/steamapps/common/Team Fortress 2/"

All the GCF files in your steamapps folder will be deleted.

Dowloaded files will not go to their respective folders based on type as they currently do. For example, a custom map you would currently download from a server will go to your "maps" folder. Once you're using SteamPipe, it will go to your "tf/download" folder. This has been done so you can distinguish between server-downloaded files(that you may want to remove) and files that you've downloaded yourself.

Files that you've previously downloaded/replaced(if they don't get deleted during conversion) will be moved to "tf/download" during the conversion. I would recommend deleting everything in the "tf/download" folder after conversion. Explanation on that in the next point.

Custom content you manually download should now go into "tf/custom", but to make it simpler to distinguish between different custom files, make a subfolder under the custom folder, such as "tf/custom/mystuff". Say you have a NoHats mod and you want to keep those custom files separate from other custom files, you can make another subfolder in 'custom', and put the NoHats files in there. So your file paths would be "tf/custom/NoHats/models" and "tf/custom/NoHats/particles". The game will still read those folders, and the NoHats files in 'models' and 'particles' will not mix with other 'models' and 'particles' files in the event that you want to remove them.

Basically, Valve says do not extract any custom content directly into "tf/custom". Always extract it into a subfolder(create one if there's nothing in there). All your addons, cfg, maps, models, particles, resource, scripts, sound folders should go into a subfolder(can be named anything) under "tf/custom".

Only .vpk files should go directly into the "tf/custom" folder. .vpk files basically contain everything a mod needs in a compressed format, including folder structure and varying files. However, at this point in time, no custom content I've heard about is distributed in .vpk format.

That's about it for now. The most important thing at the moment is to backup all your custom content, and your demos.

Adiós, Merc Cup 4!

The Grand Finals of this year's Mercenaries Cup 4 was one filled with intensity, and I'm not just saying that for the sake of saying. Both maps ended in golden caps, showing the skill level of both Muk Eun Ji and Green Leaves. In the first map Snakewater, the golden cap ran the entire 10-minute duration, and ended with the middle point dominated by the Koreans. Going back and forth so many times, it has to be nerve wrecking as the first map always sets the mood.

The second map, Badlands, also ended up in a golden cap?!?!?! WTF! This time round, Muk Eun Ji managed to secure the last cap point although the fight at the last point was a little messy. But nonetheless, props to both teams especially Green Leaves for putting up a strong fight against Muk Eun Ji, especially when their last encounter was a 6-1 5-0 roll in favour of MEJ. The final score for both maps was 3-2 on Snakewater and 4-3 on Badlands.

Player awards for such an amazing grand final!

best demo - opd

best scout - hoshimi

best clutch player - life

best pocket - babel

over powered father award - hsk's father for delivering the "father krit"

The second runner-up would be the All Stars, beating many higher-seeding teams in the competition to place third in this year's Mercenaries Cup 4. Congratulations to all the winners, which includes everyone that participated in the tournament!

Big thanks to Spammah, Yuki and Khao for casting the grand finals, Natapon as the community leader providing the Asiafortress servers and streaming the grand finals. And last but not least, thank YOU for being the community, as without you, the fourth edition of the Mercenaries Cup would never have happened.

The prize pool for this year's Mercenaries Cup amounts to 40+ refined, so congratulations to all the winners of this year's Mercenaries Cup 4, and don't splurge too much on stranges! They don't count in the Asiafortress servers anymore

Earlier today you guys saw the interview with W40kLife from Muk Eun Ji, and now here is part 2 of the Mercenaries Cup 4 Grand Finals interview with gappo3 from the Japanese team Green Leaves!

Why green leaves? By the way nice logo.

gappo3: Thanks. This logo was made by yoru. If you search ''happatai'', you can see greeen leaves

How long have you guys stayed a team?

gappo3: Green Leaves is 1 year old, but It has become 2 years since we first became acquainted.

How do we pronounce "gappo3"? Gaapo or gappoe?

gappo3: Gappo, gappothree ,gapposan etc... call me whichever you want

No matter the outcome of the grand finals, you guys are no longer placing third of Asiafortress' Merc Cup. How does that feel?

gappo3: Simply great. We hope to enjoy the final game.

Will you guys be participating in the next Asiafortress Cup together?

gappo3: I want to participate in the next cup, but I do not know what will happen.

How did you guys manage a comeback against the AllStars after losing three rounds in Ashville?

gappo3: I think we were completely cool with losing three rounds. We did not play much of Ashville, so we just analysed that map during the match. That way make a hit

How do you feel about facing Muk Eun Ji again?

gappo3: Muk Eun Ji is good team. That means skillfull and friendly. We call sub frequently from Muk Eun Ji, phex for example. I'd love to play with Muk Eun Ji again, hoping to enjoy myself.

Any shoutouts?

gappo3: gl hf

And that is it! Remember, stay tuned as we announce the match date and time (and cast!) for the grand finals for the annual Mercenaries Cup 4!

Mercenaries Cup 4 Grand Final Interview: Muk Eu...

With the Mercenaries Cup 4 Grand Finals approaching, we turn to interview the two teams that emerge victors in this long and grueling double elimination competition. In this first part, our resident Korean admin W40kLife has kindly agreed to partake in a little question and answer, answering the rumours floating around the TF2 chatosphere.

Why name a team after kimchi and a restaurant? Does one of your team members work there or have they visited?

Life: MUK EN JI is one of the kimchis we have in Korea. It doesn’t have any special meaning or something. While Creep was watching a documentary film about kimchi, he came up with the idea that it would be nice to make the team name with the name of our traditional food. For the second question, no one is working in a restaurant.

Is opd going to play in the grand finals?

Life: I guess he’s gonna play in the grand finals. He is the most essential part for the team and he knows it. You will see him in the grand finals.

Can you confirm the rumours of xeta using his side mouse keys to turn in game?

Life: That is true.

Do you guys have a main lineup of sorts?

Life=medic
opd=demo
phex, xeta=scout
creep bable toto=soldier

Do you feel confident about the grand finals against Green Leaves?

Life: Both we and Green leaves play LOL sometimes. I guess who’s gonna win depends on who's been playing LOL less. Personally we are gonna win.

What do you hope the prizes would be?

Life: Never thought of that. Gaming gears would be nice.

Will you guys join the next Asiafortress Cup together as a team, or will you guys go on to different teams?

Life: I hope so but some members will serve in the military soon, TOTO has to take SAT, and etc. I think for those reasons we can’t team up in the future.

Any shoutouts?

Cree “we will win Asianfortress Cup!”
xeta “you know what? I have a robot arm”
opd “there is no hope for us”
bebel “life’s penis is only 3cm”
phx “I have nothing to say”
forcedge “life is fucking ugly”
life “let’s hope that we can enjoy TF2 for a long time”

Stay tuned for part 2 with the Green Leaves!

Introducing Asiafortress' Skill Detector

Want to know how well you fare in the local competitive scene? Well here's your chance! With no bias, no personal grudges with equality to boot, I introduce you to the Asiafortress Skill Detector!

This mysterious wo/man is part of our community. Something like Gossip Girl, only that he/she works alone without his/her minions (or does he/she have them?), and he/she doesn't destroy lives with an e-blast.

One pre-requisite you must have though for your skill to be detected is that you actually have to play in our servers. Although he/she might be all-knowing, he/she isn't Robin Walker and cannot access the logs of the various other servers that you play on, and he/she rates solely on your competitive TF2 skills (metagame, DM etc) that is visible here in Asiafortress.

So what are you waiting for? I got rated, and although I don't necessarily main Soldier but I still think that the points presented were fair and just. Click through this sentence and request for a rating!

Mercenaries Cup 4: PRE-GAME INTERVIEW

Just a mere three weeks ago, we saw one of the most exciting local matches here in Asiafortress - the derby between secret.tf2 and the AllStars. Come 21 days later, the two teams are due to face each other again in the following week. The maps are Snakewater and Warmfront with Gullywash as the tiebreaker. I had a chat (more like me asking questions and them answering) with the leaders from both teams, and I hope you're pleased with the results.

First up is brandon/giovannie/yuko/?!?!?!?!? from secret.tf2!

How do you feel coming all the way here in merc cup 4?

Well, it's been a great journey so far. Had a couple of nice intense games, most notably the one against AllStars in the upper bracket. Went into this tournament with a few big roster changes, most notably picking up abel on roam, and myself moving to demoman. Right now we're at lower bracket finals? semis? I dunno but the team has improved significantly since the start of the tournament and I'm proud of us.

How did you feel about the previous derby between you guys and allstars?

It was one of the most entertaining games I've played in recent years. The last actual fun matches I played were the TF2 Masters LAN semis against 5th Company and finals against nefarious.tf2. I'm not exactly a fan of 5-0 rolls but rather I like playing those games which go to-and-fro and make everyone in STV bite their nails off and shizz. I went into the match relatively confident about badlands but not so much about process, turns out we lost badlands over the most nerve-wracking 30 minutes ever and dominated process, which was a huge surprise. Made a couple of bad calls, made a couple of bad decisions which cost us a few rounds but they're all stuff to learn from. Warmfront was painful to play, mainly because I believe both teams have not practised it before, and it showed. Compared to the first two maps, warmfront was slow and stalematish. A huge contributing factor was the map design as well - it should not be allowed in future competitions for the sake of the community not spiralling into inevitable retardation should warmfront continue to be in the map pool. Losing the match overall through a golden cap after a dominant 2nd map was... well, not the best feeling in the world. However I think it set us up for easier games against whoever we played in the lower bracket, and it allowed us to practise strats and get our shit back together. Not digressing too much, the previous local derby just showed the community that hey, singaporean teams can put up good fights as well. I'm sure it was an entertaining watch for those who were listening to the cast/watching in STV as it was for us playing the match itself.

Are you looking forward to the next derby?

Hmmm... yeah to a certain extent. It'll be a fun match to play for sure although there's gonna be more at stake here considering it's a lower bracket game. Both teams want a go at the grand finals for sure, and it'll all come down to who want it more.

How do you feel beating Lust Lust Lust in the lower bracket?

I think they've improved dramatically since the last time we scrimmed them. What started out as 5-0 rolls ended in a narrow win in the tournament. We were expecting that though, looking at their results against paranoid Andriod. They have great teamwork, and they just need to improve on their DM a tad more. Kinda similar to us actually, our DM is trash. I believe Lust Lust Lust will go far if they stick together after the tournament. It was an exciting match too although ping was an issue.

Do you think you guys have a chance to be the champions of Merc Cup 4?

Oh gee. Honestly? Yeah, why not? We want to win, who doesn't? Muk Eun Ji are really strong though, and I believe they want to regain their title as the Asian champions after dizziness' win in AFL2. The only team close to beating them was Cataclysmic, but back then pings were a bitch, not gonna continue ranting about that. But while I think the AllStars stand a better chance against MEJ because of how they play, they'd have to get past us first, and we will put up a great show.

Anyone you wanna give shoutouts to?

Shoutouts to the cataclysmic family, the boys over at jediknightz, candice & company, lexxy, all my mentees, facecake, everyone who has supported us/still supporting us and joe for the interview.

Next, we turn to the puzzling Agent C/Carmichael/Morgan/?!?!!? of the AllStars to peek at his thoughts.

How do you feel coming all the way here in Merc Cup 4?

Cheated.

Care to explain why?

With all credit to Muk En Ji, but we strongly believe we should be in the winners bracket.

How did you feel about the previous derby between you guys and secret.tf2?

I felt as usual it was a very close affair. We feel a strong sense of pride as just a short while ago we were way behind them in terms of quality.

Are you looking forward to the next derby?

We are not looking forward to playing secret.tf2 again as we just dont have the time to play regularly anymore. 5 out of our 6 core players are working full time now and it makes practise very difficult. Secret.tf2 on the other hand have had a lot of time to study us and improve. I'm sure they are looking to reclaim the top SG spot.

How do you feel about coming into contact with the highest seeding team, Muk Eun Ji?

We are looking forward to playing them again as we do feel a bit robbed by the ping issues that blighted the last match. Since this will be the second meet up between the teams I feel that there are going to be a lot of shocks in store after both sides have adjusted their tactics.

Do you think you guys have a chance to emerge overall champion for Merc Cup 4?

If we navigate past tomorrow yes i do feel we have a very strong chance and as an afterthought the new schedule of how the matches are being played are just too intensive with less then 5 days sometimes for matches.

Both interviews have been edited for clarity.

Don't forget to catch the next meeting of secret.tf2 and the AllStars tomorrow at 10PM! More details will be announced soon.[/size]

DAY 19.

12 teams left. The past few days have been filled with so much intensity it burns brighter than the ego of a certain spy after dropping a certain medic that was sadly not captured on camera and might only be a fable till the STV comes out.

On Monday, the 18th of February, we saw three different matches played, with one match causing all AsiaFortress servers to mysteriously go down except the match server. secret.tf2 versus AllStars, Xtremezone Gaming versus Color Gaming and #hashtagz versus THE SYSTEMATIC PEOPLE. Let's recap the days news shall we?

The secret.tf2 versus AllStars match is one of the most high profile Singaporean matches, with the two teams being the most well known in the South East Asian region. Being cast by Greaver and NoMercy, this game isn't even a semi final match! This game was no doubt one of the most exciting ones I've seen in AsiaFortress, with crazy plays made by both teams. The three maps played were Badlands, Process and the tie-breaker was Warmfront.

AllStars took Badlands 6-5, with both teams bringing intense plays and derpkips sneaking in a last rocket just before the shutters closed and dropped zee. Another highlight from secret.tf2 during the Badlands game was russkan übering the two scouts and the demo past the shutters while AllStars was holding forward lobby, capping the point with no obstacles. The last push from AllStars however, sealed the deal. Puzzled went spy, and although secret.tf2 was expecting that, they didn't hear the decloak and the rest was history. Sadly though, that last push was cut out from SourceTV and I fondly remember hearing Agent K screaming, "I SAT HERE FOR SO LONG AND NOW THIS?".

On the next map, however, secret.tf2 showed their experience with Process by rolling AllStars 6-1. It was a back-and-forth map that had both teams taking the mid point and losing it soon after, only to get it back again. Pre-game, Arcadia from the AllStars was having trouble doing the first jump from spawn, but when the match started he had no problems rolling out to mid at all. I was spectating ricolee one round and saw a crit sticky from secret.tf2 flying into his face, only to have it detonate just a few pixels away from causing any damage. He was still 300 health, but running away.

The third map, Warmfront, was even more draggy. The first round took an estimated of 14 minutes, with both teams pushing the last point but failing to capture, only after awhile did AllStars manage the first cap. The next 5 rounds, however, were quite solid, with the game ending in a 3-3 tie between the two teams. During those 5 rounds, we saw excellent surfing from russkan (surfing onto a health pack only to be killed by a rocket that was aimed there at the same time), extreme dodging from zee (dodging pipes and rockets only to be killed by a rocket while she was running away) and so many airshots by tharnos. The game resulted in a golden cap on Warmfront which went to the AllStars. It was a great defense by secret.tf2 on the last point, but alas the knockback from the rockets of secret.tf2 lost the cap.

AllStars will proceed to rumble with Muk Eun Ji, a team with a perfect record so far, and the predicted winner of this year's Merc Cup 4. secret.tf2 on the other hand will battle it out with THE SYSTEMATIC PEOPLE this following week.

Moving on to other news, solstice forfeited their match against For Freak's Sake as they lacked players for their rescheduled match. For Freak's Sake will go on to Game Z with Team Dignity from Taikongpore (Taiwan, Hong Kong and Singapore lah!).

Xtremezone Gaming from Vietnam forfeited their third map (Warmfront) against Color Gaming, lacking players. Color Gaming will head on to face paranoid Andriod from the Republic of Korea. The winner of the game will head to the semi finals against either For Freak's Sake or Team Dignity.

In the last match on the 18th of February, THE SYSTEMATIC PEOPLE from Japan rolled #hashtagz 5-0 5-0 for both Badlands and Process. TSP will then go on to Game Y against secret.tf2. The winner of Game Y will head on to the semi finals against either 420 or Project J.

Muk Eun Ji, Green Leaves, Lust Lust Lust and AllStars have fought hard to stay in the winners bracket, with Muk Eun Ji having a 5-point difference in every map they have played in MC4. Will they continue rolling onwards to victory even against AllStars or Green Leaves/Lust Lust Lust? You'll see in a month.
